DBX Doomsday Bunker
South Carolina, USA
Information:
DBX is an underground bunker created as a shelter for catastrophic events and guarantees its inhabitants’ survival for long durations of time. DBX combines ABIBOO’s expertise in space architecture and ultra-luxury single-family homes.
In fact, not only does DBX function as a survival shelter, but it is also planned as a completely self-sufficient second home. The relationship with nature, both inside the house and in its 12-acre plot, allows enjoying short stays and continuous periods in case of emergency or a long-term lockdown. The shelter can accommodate up to two family groups and a maximum of ten people.
The bunker is conceived in modular spaces surrounding a hydroponic garden, which acts like an underground greenhouse. The hydroponic solution increases efficiency and reduces maintenance. This system requires less water and space than soil-based techniques, and it avoids the use of pesticides. A total of 1,200 square feet of floor area is dedicated to crops, illuminated 24 hours a day with violet LEDs, the most effective for cultivation without exposure to the sun.
DBX doomsday shelter also accommodates space for food supply with cold storage for food and seeds and a storage vault with a capacity for 150 cubic meters of freeze-dried packaged food.
Electricity is generated by redundant systems, including a generator connected to a fuel reserve. DBX shelter also has energy support through geothermal and biomass accumulators. The generator charges 30 lithium batteries and provides electricity from 12 to 120 volts throughout the bunker. The heating and cooling air system are solved by geothermal energy. The water is extracted from the subsoil and passes through a filtration system and ultraviolet light that kills bacteria. The water intended for consumption is stored frozen.
A network of ventilation ducts with an NBC and ULPA filtration system is hidden in each vault’s false ceiling. The filters extract the carbon dioxide inside, replace the stale air, and remove even nuclear dust particles. An additional decontamination system for air purification is located at the airtight cabin at the bunker’s entrance. This room prevents the entry of pollutants into the main home space. An air shower and a wet shower with sterilizers act as a sanitary barrier, minimizing the risk of contamination, either because of a pandemic or a chemical hazard.
